 Finding Used Cars in Michigan
Looking for used cars in Michigan can be a daunting experience. After all, it was the birthplace of the auto industry and is the home of Ford and General Motors. Cars have infiltrated just about every aspect of life in Michigan, from the economy to the state spirit. Even with that said, finding a quality used model can be harder than finding a resident who is not linked to the auto industry somehow. To make sure you are doing business with a trusted vendor, follow these easy to remember and simple guidelines to find yourself driving around the Great Lakes in your used car in no time.

The first thing to do is check what the dealer or seller’s policy is on providing you with vehicle history reports. There are the documents that utilize the car’s unique VIN (vehicle identification number) to track the major maintenance, repairs, and accidents associated with the car. These reports are essential to making an informed decision about a used car, as it will provide you with all the exact details that a deal might gloss over or sugar coat with evasive language. If a car is a lemon then this report will make it very apparent.

All reputable used car dealers will offer this report to you free of charge, or for a very small fee (under ten dollars). However, if a dealer refuses to get the report for you then that is a huge red flag that they can’t be trusted. Either they know something about the car they hope you don’t find out, they’ve lied about it in some way, or they don’t know anything about the car and are afraid to find out. No matter what their motive, run, don’t walk, away from that seller!

Another major thing to look for when buying used cars in Michigan is a satisfaction policy. Most reputable dealers will offer a no-risk trial for purchasing the car that allows you to return it with little penalty within the first seven to sixty days. If you are purchasing from an independent seller then they should be willing to agree to some form of trial period as well. If they won’t, then try somewhere else. The only caveat to trial periods is if the car is clearly advertised “as-is.”

A final thing to be aware of when looking for a used car is reputation. Reputation is the key to finding a trustworthy vendor, and thanks to the internet word of mouth can travel at the speed of electricity. Before buying, ask around to see if anyone you know has had experience with the seller and be sure to check online for any information about them. You’d be surprised about the amount of specific information people will write in reviews online, and all of it is valuable.

The bottom line when looking for used cars in Michigan is to follow your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right or seems too good to be true, then chances are it is. Remember that your vehicle is more than just a fun toy, but a piece of safety equipment that is responsible for your life and the lives of your passengers. Don’t sacrifice peace of mind and trust in your vehicle for the sake of an unbelievable deal. There are great used car opportunities out there; you just need to know where to look!
