The Difference Between Aftermarket and OEM Ford Parts

When most people purchase a car they do not give much consideration to the parts that it is made of. Car owners are typically more concerned with the handling of the car, how comfortable it is and the way the car looks. It is not until a car breaks down or needs some maintenance work done that a car owner considers what types of parts to use for the repair. Most people probably think there is not much of an option when it comes to buying parts for a car. However, there are numerous brands to consider and parts range from aftermarket to OEM Ford parts. It is important to know the difference between these particular parts before you make a decision.

OEM Ford parts are known as original equipment manufacturer parts. These parts are made specifically for Ford automobiles. Many automobile manufacturers partner with a second company to design and make certain parts for a car. For instance, a manufacturer will design and produce spindles, brakes and other components to be put into an automobile. Each automobile will contain these specific parts made by an outside manufacturer. In addition, OEM replacement parts are available at a local automobile dealer and are the same genuine parts that are made by a specific manufacturer.

On the other end of the spectrum are aftermarket parts. These specific parts are the exact opposite of OEM Ford parts. Aftermarket parts are manufactured by an outside company that is in no way related to Ford or any other automobile company. They are made by an independent company who buy the rights to produce a specific part. More often than not, aftermarket parts are universal parts made by an outside company to fit numerous types of cars. Aftermarket parts are not made to fit a specific car but they are made to fit and perform just like the original manufactured part.

Both aftermarket parts and OEM Ford parts have their own features and benefits. The most obvious benefit of OEM parts is the fact that they are made specifically to fit your car. You can rest assured knowing that the part you are installing in your car will fit and perform just like the original manufactured part. With OEM parts you know that you are getting the same quality and standards associated with your car. OEM parts are most likely to be found at your local automobile dealer and sometimes come with a higher price tag. However, you are paying for the quality and performance of a part that is made specifically for your car.

Aftermarket parts can be found at pretty much any automotive repair store and at online retailers. One of the downfalls of aftermarket parts is that not all parts may be available with an aftermarket manufacturer. Some of the parts that are made for your car are strictly "dealer only" parts. This means that the dealer is the only one authorized the manufacture and sell the specific part. Another downfall is the fact that aftermarket parts are not made for specific vehicles. Because of this fact, sometimes aftermarket parts take a little work in order for them to fit right and work at the level you want them to work. However, one benefit of aftermarket parts is that they tend to be cheaper than other parts.

Ultimately it is up to the automobile owner to decide if they want to go with OEM Ford parts or aftermarket parts. There are definitely pros and cons when it comes to choosing and OEM part versus an aftermarket part. You have to weight these pros and cons to decide which option is best for you and your car.
